Thank you for letting me join this group. I am looking forward to seeing what information is posted especially about older manual focus AI lenses. I own and shoot pictures with several Nikon cameras including an F2AS, F3, FM and Nikkormat as well as an AF N75.

I am looking into buying a nikon 43-86 F3.5 AI zoom to use on my F body cameras. Can anyone give me things to look out for when buying a used zoom like this? I have seen seeral on e-bay with good prices but am not sure if that is a good place to purchase a used lens.

Allison:

The 43-86 3.5 zoom was the first AI Nikkor lens I bought, still have it and love it. I never had any of the problems some folks have described with their 43-86. For a couple years it was the only lens I used with my Nikon FM SLR back in the late 1970s.

As an addendum, when I worked for the Waco TX Tribune-Herald newspaper from 1971-77 as a reporter/photographer and our chief photographer used the non AI 43-86 almost exclusively. I seldom saw John use any other lens. That's why I bought the AI version 43-86 as my first lens when I got an FM several years later.

I know there are some 43-86's that are not sharp and have some other problems, but mine is excellent.

This isent a bug report, but I would just like to ask that how to use the
unstable Sid repository while building a live cd?

The last time I used 'lh_config -d sid xxx' and saw that the build fails to
include squashfs-modules.

Also, I have 5 debian DVD's which could be used to create a live cd without
making use of net. But somehow live-helper needs net connection..Please
include some facility so that lh_config can also use dvd's just like
synpatic does from cd/dvd..I tried all sorts of tricks I thought I knew, but
didnt work, one of reasons being my lack of knowledge.

Meanwhile, if I am sending this to the wrong place or wrong person, help me
by providing the email or web location of the concerned people who can help
me.

I have no ideea how to fix your problem, but I would suggest posting
with a better subject. No offence, but half the mails in my spam folder
have "Hello" as a subject...

Make sure you get the second version of this lens. Serial number 774071 or
higher. It is an eleven element lens. The older version had nine.
That said, the 43-86 is a great range but not a great lens.

Just being technical, but the AI beginning at S/N 774071 is the third version. First was the A type with chrome filter ring, second the C type with the black filter ring & possibly improved coating, & the third is the AI version beginning at S/N 774071, (as you stated) & incorporating the improved 11 element design which is definitely the best of the three optically.
Looking at my usual sources I suspect a decent 'user' may require some real looking.

Actually, Allison, my allusion was not so much to the Japanese school of Zen Buddhist thought as is was to the 1960's work by Robert M. Pirsig, 'Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance'. That work remains one of my all-time favorite reads (right up there with Braczko's, 'The Nikon Handbook'- (requisite relevant content link!))
