mpeg4 on Ion ?

I've started playing around with transcoding shows to save
space. (The Olympics "challenged" my backend. :-) ) But it seems
that my Zotac Ion (single core) has trouble playing mpeg4.
(I assume its mpeg4. I picked it under "transcode from mpeg2",
its a .nuv file and mplayer says that it uses the ffmpeg mpeg4
codec.)

I was hoping to verify with other Ion users that they have the
same trouble, or maybe get some tips on getting the video to
play.

The symptoms were that video is jerky, and audio is a little
off and also jerky. myth was taking up 70-90% of the CPU.
(It plays mpeg2 flawlessly.)

I've played with various settings but most don't have any
affect. The biggest help was turning off the de-interlacer
entirely.

I was running version 190 of the driver. I upgraded to 195
and now Bob Costas sounds like he's on helium.

I had allocated only 256M of video memory. I upped this
to 512M with no improvement.

So, is there no way to play mpeg4 on one of these guys ?

Thanks!

mpeg4 on Ion ?

MPEG4 in VDPAU is a quite new feature and I think it only works on the G2xx
cards. I don't think the ION has the proper hardware for it. Transcode to
h264, and it should work fine. I don't know if there is a default setting in
Myth to do that though, you might have to set it up yourself.

Does anyone have a 'how-to' to transcode to h.264 and replace the
standard recording in myth, keeping the commflag positions, etc.

I have a user job that I use (using ffmpeg) to create a h.264 version
for my iPod, but I would prefer to use the 'built-in' mythtranscode if
I could - replacing the original file and keeping my commflag
positions if possible (rather than doing the actual cuts which
sometimes brings in a/v sync errors or gets the cuts slightly wrong).

To try to avoid confusion, MPEG-4 is an umbrella standard/term and
includes H.264 (MPEG-4 AVC, MPEG-4 Part 10) and Xvid/DivX (MPEG-4 ASP,
MPEG-4 Part 2) [1].

H.264 can be decoded by all VDPAU-supported graphics chips (those
supporting feature sets A, B,or C). Xvid/DivX requires a graphics chip
supporting feature set C, which means a Geforce 200M series chip [2].
Ion chipsets only support feature set B, which will explain the OP's
problems.

Ack. Well, that saved me some trouble. I was planning on buying a Revo
for a FE at some point, and most of my content has already been
transcoded to MPEG4.

Anybody have a good script to convert files en-masse, without affecting
other properties?

Is your stuff HD or SD?

The limitations of the Revo in this respect are not as big of a deal with
the SD content. Although I would expect it to be a problem with HD stuff. A
ran an appletv and it handled myth recordings transcoded with the default
MPEG4 transcoder just fine (even HD). IONs have less raw CPU power than an
appletv though.

Apparently the ION2 stuff is not that far off.

I've got some of both so, yes, HD will probably be an issue.

handbrake and avidemux both work on the commandline and will capably
convert to h264.

Well, the ION2 chips are out soon, including some nettops. I think its based on the GeForce G 210M which has the VP4 feature set, which has the MPEG4 decode.

So, if you can wait a bit, that might be the better option.

You're right, the Ion has a 9400M and therefore doesn't support MPEG4 part 2.

Some (emphasis on the word SOME) members of the GeForce 8xxx card
family do support VDPAU. A list of which cards do/don't support VDPAU
